Seek it Like Silver
by Linda Tomblin
“If you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will … discover the knowledge of God” (Prov. 2:4-5).
I felt bad that I’d never received a college degree. My early training had consisted of business school and an occasional college course fitted carefully around children and whatever job I had at the time. And somehow the days, weeks, months, and years slipped away quickly, until I suddenly found myself retired with no diploma hanging on the wall.
So, when I quit working full time, I went back to college online and started studying all those textbooks I hadn’t had time for before. Several months into the process, however, as I studied for an exam in algebra the next day, I became extremely frustrated. To tell you the truth, I didn’t like algebra, or any kind of math. I would never use it on a job, so why was I essentially wasting my time? I needed to make the wisest use of my senior years. I didn’t want to learn about algebra or chemistry, and I certainly didn’t want to learn about biology or any of the other ‘ologies. That’s when I finally decided I no longer wanted a degree just to say I had one. If I were going to study, then what I really wanted to learn more about was the Bible.
So, I decided to really study the Bible. Of course, that meant I’d never be sought out for my extensive knowledge of the world, but I knew if I would concentrate on the Word of God and apply it to my life, I would receive all the knowledge and wisdom I would ever need.
God would give me the insight and help me to understand what He was saying. And instead of spending money on tuition and thick textbooks that weighed almost as much as they cost, all I needed was my Bible, an open heart, and the willingness to seek the genuine knowledge that could only be found within God’s Word.
