Introductory Activity – Think of a Rhyme
- No materials needed
Select a word that rhymes with pray (such as day). Tell kids: “I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with pray. Can you guess it in five tries?” Call on 3 volunteers. If no one guesses in three tries, give a clue: “This is something on a calendar.” Call on 2 more volunteers. If neither guess, give the answer. Choose a kid to think of a rhyme for others to guess. Continue through several rounds. Tell kids that they will think about praying for missionaries today.
Live It Out
Game – Blow the Life Point
- Thin craft foam, permanent marker, scissors, straws (one per child)
Cut craft foam into small rectangles. Print each word of the Life Point on a rectangle. Make several sets of words. Scatter each set of words on a different table (or opposite ends of tables).
Say the Life Point together. Group kids into groups, one group for each set of words. Give each child a straw. Lead each group to stand around the set of words. On your signal, the groups should work together to blow the words around the table and put the words in order. When a group blows all the words into order, they should stand and shout “Yes!” Talk about the Bible verse and the Life Point. Help kids begin to understand how people can pray for missionaries who tell about Jesus around the world.
Craft – Prayer Reminder
- Coffee filters or paper towels cut into circles, blue and green washable markers, cups of water, paintbrushes, permanent thin-line markers
Give a coffee filter to each child. Lead kids to print Pray for missionaries or similar message on edge of their filters. Lead them to use blue and green markers to draw abstract versions of the world (a globe). After they have used the markers, lead them to paint over the marker lines with water. The colors will fade and run together to make a more “world” appearance. Tell kids to post their reminders after the filters dry. Tell them to pray for missionaries this week. Name missionaries that may be connected to your church or find missionary names on missions Web sites.
Introductory Activity – Name a Country
- Paper, pencils
Display the word missionary. Challenge kids to name countries around the world that begin with each letter of the word. They can work independently or in groups to list as many countries as they can for the letters. Tell kids that today they will think about praying for missionaries around the world.
Live It Out
Game – Drop the Verse
- Index cards or paper squares, markers
Print the words of the Bible verse on cards, one word per card. Make a set of verse words for each team — each set of words a different colored marker. Mix all the words together into one stack.
Group the kids into two (or more) teams. Assign each team a color (that corresponds to the word colors). Stand in the middle of the game area with teams standing around the perimeter. Hold the stack of words above your head and drop the words. On your signal, teams run to the words and pick up any words showing that belong to their team. (Teams can only pick up words that are face up.) Lead kids to take the team’s words to a designated area and work to put the verse in order (as best as possible). Gather the facedown words, mix, and drop them again for teams to gather additional words. When a team has the verse in order, the team can shout, “We did it!” Talk about the Bible story and the Life Point. Challenge kids to pray for missionaries this week.
Craft – Prayer Frame
- Wide craft sticks (about 7 per kid), washi tape, glue, push pins (one per kid), paper, pens, scissors
Lead each kid to cover the fronts of five craft sticks with washi tape. She can use all the same tape or different tape for each stick. When she finishes, tell her to lay the sticks tape side down. She can glue two other sticks perpendicular to the decorated sticks to attach them together. Lead kids to cut paper to fit the size of the attached sticks. Tell kids to write the Life Point on the paper and attach to the “frame” with a push pin. Talk about missionaries connected with your church or other missionaries. Tell kids to pray for these missionaries this week. Tell kids they can attach names or pictures to their frames as reminders to pray for missionaries.
Note: Use more sticks to create larger frames.
